Pattern rules
Apply changes to many URLs at once based on patterns.
- Wildcard —
*matches any characters (e.g./blog/tag/*) - Regex — regular expressions for complex matching
Rules apply top-to-bottom, first match wins. Individual overrides always beat pattern rules.
Example rules
| Pattern | Action |
|---|---|
/blog/tag/* |
Exclude from sitemap |
/products/* |
Priority 0.8, weekly |
/page/[0-9]+ |
Exclude pagination |
Review the match scope
Use a pattern narrow enough for the intended URLs and inspect the resulting selection before export. In the examples, the pagination pattern belongs to Regex mode; it is not a wildcard expression. Check ordering when two rules could match, and inspect any individual override that takes precedence.
For example, excluding tag archives from a sitemap does not itself prevent crawling or indexing of those archives. Decide whether a separate page policy is required with the responsible maintainer. Rules prepare sitemap output; they do not publish it.
